RULES AND REGULATION – Middle distance

Challenge Sanremo is run under Italian Triathlon Federation, Circolare Gare of FITRI and Challenge Sanremo regulations.

The race distances are 1,9 km swim; 82 km bike and 21.1 km run. At all times competitors must obey the instructions of Race Officials and Police Officers and beware of traffic laws. Any competitor who fails to obey the Race officials or the Police’s instructions be removed from the Event and disqualified; the competitor will be able to accomplish the race, exercising the right to appeal to the panel, explaining the complaints and following the official procedure.

Competitors must always respect all the Regulations and Rules during the entire route, respecting the indications of the staff, the Judges and the Police. In fact, even if the routes are closed to vehicular traffic, keep in mind that residents, emergency vehicles and other vehicles related to the event may pass by, so the road rules must be followed constantly along the entire route; the right-hand rule applies.

Challenge Sanremo is an invitation event, and the Event organisers may refuse entry to any competitor, on any grounds, and at their own discretion without explanation.

No changes are allowed beyond September 17th 2024.

No team member changes are allowed after the 17th September 2024.

The competition is restricted to athletes affiliated to a National Triathlon Federation. Challenge Sanremo can book for you a medical examination in Italy before the race.

The Event Medical Team will have ultimate discretion and the final decision as to the suitability of a competitor to continue in the Event, and likewise if they should be withdrawn from the Event.

No competitor may use any banned substances with the intent to improve their performance, eliminate the sense of fatigue or for any other purpose. Doping tests will be carried out.

It is important that all competitors exhibit good behavior and sportsmanlike conduct, and treat fellow competitors, Event organizers, volunteers and contractors with courtesy and respect. Failure to do so may result in disqualification at any time before, during or after the Event.

If a competitor withdraws from the Event they must notify the course officials of their withdrawal immediately. Any competitor failing to do so and being the subject of a resulting search and rescue operation he/she will have to cover all the costs relating to this exercise if they are found to be in their accommodation or other safe places.

Challenge Sanremo reserves the right to alter rules, regulations, Event course and venues at any time as long as athletes are advised prior to the Event, or if such a change is in the interest of competitor safety.

No headphones or headsets may be worn during swim or bike legs of the event.

Challenge Sanremo competitors may not compete with a bare torso. Each competitor must be familiar with the entire course and it is their responsibility to follow the correct route.

Any protests must be lodged with the Race Referee as expected by F.i.Tri Regulations.

In the case of bad weather, Challenge Sanremo reserves the right to convert the Event to duathlon status in the interests of competitor safety: in this case no registration fee will be compensated.

Challenge Sanremo may test any athlete for the use of a prohibited substance at its own discretion. A positive test will result in disqualification.

Prize money shall not be paid out until all drug-testing results are confirmed.

Prize money is paid as follows (in Euros):

Prize money applies to individual Pro Men and individual Pro Women fields only. Prize money will be paid according to overall race position.

All prize money is liable under Italian law. All bank fees are the responsibility of each competitor.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group as long as they are an official category. The age groups are: S1 (20-24), S2 (25-29), S3 (30-34), S4 (35-39), M1 (40-44), M2 (45-49), M3 (50-54), M4 (55-59), M5 (60-64), M6 (65-69), M7 (70-74), M8 (75+).

Athletes must be born in 2004 or before.

Provided race numbers must be visible at all times throughout the race.

All athletes must register during the allocated times and attend the compulsory race briefing. All individuals and teams must rack their bicycles during the allocated times – there will be no exceptions to this rule. The Event organizers reserve the right to disqualify anyone not adhering to these rules.

 

 

SWIM RULES Middle distance

Challenge Sanremo will provide a swim cap. Use of wetsuit will be evaluated depending water temperature and safety condition.

No fins, paddles, snorkels, flotation devices of any kind are permitted. Swim goggles or face masks may be worn. Any assistance required during swim may result in disqualification.

The swim course will close for all participant 55 minutes after the start of last athlete. When training on the course immediately prior to the event, brightly coloured swim caps must be worn for you own safety. Anyone reported swimming without a brightly coloured cap may be disqualified from the race.

Event organizers have the right to change the location of the swim course, the distance of the swim course or cancel the swim course (at their absolute discretion) taking into account the weather and water temperature conditions.

 

 

BIKE RULES Middle distance

No drafting is permitted. The cycle draft zone is a 20 meter long rectangle between the front edge of the lead cycle and the front edge of the following cycle.

An athlete has 25 seconds to pass through that zone. Likewise, once an athlete is passed they have 5 seconds to drop back out of the draft zone. Race numbers must not be changed in size or appearance, and must be worn on the back during the bike.

Only approved helmets are accepted.

Helmets must be secured by the chin strap before taking the bike, and must remain fastened until the cyclist has dismounted the bike and returned it to its rack.

No individual support allowed. The bike course is closed to all supporter traffic and no competitor may seek or receive outside help from spectators, members of the public with the exception of the official technical support crew.

Each participant is responsible for the state or repair of his/her own bike. Bikes must have been serviced within three weeks of the event and be in a safe and roadworthy condition. Assistance by anyone other than official technical support personnel will be grounds for immediate disqualification. This disallows the use of spare wheels and back-up bikes and requires that each competitor be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction.

All bikes must undergo a compulsory check by the official technical support in the lead up to the race or at check-in. Only checked bikes will be allowed into transition.

Cyclists are expected to listen to directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities. Participant may run/walk their bike if necessary.

Competitors must keep as far to the right as is practically possible at all times, and pass others on the left and must obey all traffic laws, traffic regulations and the directions of Event officials and the Police. On driveways, do not go beyond the centreline.

The penalty for drafting, dangerous riding or unsportsmanlike conduct will be a 5′ STOP and GO; athletes have to stop at the first  box after penalty . A second penalty will result in another 5′ STOP and GO.

The bike course will close for all competitors before 5h20′ since the start (at 13:29). Event organizers reserve the right to remove competitors from the race who do not complete the bike leg by this cut-off time.

Event organizers have the right to change the location of the bike course or the distance of the bike course (at their absolute discretion) and taking into account the weather and course conditions.

 

 

RUN RULES Middle distance

Competitors must not alter the size or appearance of the race number, and must wear it clearly and visibly on their front.

Slower competitors must keep to the right with other competitors overtaking on the left.

Runners must stay inside the cones and traffic dividers at all times. Runners who step outside the cones and traffic dividers onto the open road will be disqualified immediately.

No individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners or cyclists are allowed. Friends, family members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike, drive or run alongside competitors, may not pass food or other items to competitors and should be warned to stay completely clear of all participants to avoid the disqualification of a participant.

Runners are expected to follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities. Outside assistance is strictly forbidden and the size and nature of penalties for such an offense are at the sole discretion of the Event Director and Race Referee.

Competitors must obey all traffic laws, traffic regulations and the directions of Event officials and the Police.

The run course will close for all competitors at 16:09. 

Event organizers reserve the right to remove from the course competitors who do not complete the race by this cut-off time. Event organizers have the right to change the location of the run course or the distance of the run course (at their absolute discretion) and taking into account the weather and course conditions.

RACE REGULATIONS Sprint Distance

Challenge Sanremo will be held following the Technical Regulations and the Circolare Gare of the F.I.Tri in addition to the rules of Challenge Sanremo 2024.

The race distances are as follows: 0.75 km for swimming, 20 km for cycling and 5 km for running.

Competitors must observe the instructions of both the race judges and the police officers for the entire duration of the race, as well as comply with the Traffic Laws.

Anyone who does not observe the aforementioned regulations and instructions will be disqualified from the competition by the Race Judges; they may also finish the race to avail themselves of the right to appeal to the Appeal Jury, motivating their complaints, following the official appeal procedure.

Competitors must always respect all the Regulations and Rules during the entire course, respecting the instructions of the same, the Judges and the Police Bodies. In fact, even if the routes are closed to vehicular traffic, keep in mind that residents, emergency vehicles and other vehicles related to the event may pass by, so road rules must be followed at all times along the entire route; the right-hand rule applies.

Challenge Sanremo is an invitation-only event, and the organizers may refuse participation to any competitor, for any reason, and at their discretion, without providing explanation.

To take part in Challenge Sanremo, you must be a member of a National Triathlon Federation.

The event’s medical team will have the final say on whether a competitor is fit to continue or not to compete.

The use of substances capable of improving performance, reducing fatigue or for any other purpose is prohibited. Anti-doping tests will be carried out.

It is essential that all competitors observe proper behavior and have a sporting attitude, addressing other competitors, organizers, volunteers and collaborators with courtesy and respect, under penalty of exclusion from the race at any time: before, during or after the event.

If a competitor withdraws from the competition, he must immediately inform the race judges of his withdrawal. In the absence of this procedure, when the rescue procedure is started and the athlete is instead found in a hotel or in any case in a safe situation, the latter will have to cover all the costs that the rescue activities will have produced.

Challenge Sanremo reserves the right to change the rules, regulations, program and locations of the event at any time. Athletes will be informed of the changes before the event or otherwise in the event that the aforementioned change is made in the interest of the competitor’s safety.

The use of headphones and earphones during the race phases is prohibited, under penalty of disqualification.

It is forbidden to compete bare-chested. Each competitor must be familiar with the entire route and it is their responsibility to recognize and follow the correct route.

Any complaints must be submitted by the athlete to the Referee Judge as provided by the Italian Triathlon Federation.

In case of bad weather, Challenge Sanremo reserves the right to convert the event to duathlon status in the interest of competitor safety; in this case, no registration fee will be refunded to competitors.

Challenge Sanremo may test, at its discretion, any athlete for the use of a prohibited substance. A positive test will result in disqualification.

Prizes will not be awarded until all anti-doping test results have been confirmed. The prize pool will be divided as follows:

The cash prize refers only to the individual men’s and women’s event.

Prizes will be awarded based on the position in the general ranking.

Cash prizes are subject to Italian tax legislation. Bank charges are the responsibility of each competitor.

The first 3 in each Age Group category will be awarded. The categories are divided as follows: YB (16-17), JU (18-19), S1 (20-24), S2 (25-29), S3 (30-34), S4 (35-39), M1 (40-44), M2 (45-49), M3 (50-54), M4 (55-59), M5 (60-64), M6 (65-69), M7 (70-74), M8 (75+).

Athletes born in 2008 and earlier may take part in the event.

The race numbers provided must be visible at all times during the race.

All athletes must register within the specified times and attend the race briefing.

All athletes and teams must set up their bikes within the specified times – there will be no exceptions to this rule.

 

SprintDistance SWIMMING REGULATIONS

The organizer will provide the race cap. The use of wetsuit will be regulated based on water temperature and safety conditions. Fins, snorkels, paddles, flotation devices of any kind are not permitted.

The use of goggles or swimming masks is permitted. Any assistance requested during the swim may lead to disqualification.

The swimming course must be completed within 25 minutes of the departure of the last competitor. The course will most likely have to be completed by 9:27 am.

During the warm-up on the race course before the competition, colored caps must be worn to ensure maximum safety for competitors.

Anyone seen swimming without colored caps may incur disqualification.

The organizers reserve the right to change the course of the swimming race, the distance of the race or cancel the fraction, taking into account the weather conditions and water temperature.

 

CYCLING REGULATION SprintDistance

Drafting is permitted.

Race numbers must not be altered in size or appearance, and must be worn on the back during the race.

Only approved helmets are accepted.

Helmets must be properly fastened before removing the bicycle from the bike rack and vice versa must remain fastened until the cyclist has dismounted the bicycle and placed it back on its own bike rack.

No assistance is permitted.

The cycling course is closed to supporters and no competitor may ask for or receive external assistance from spectators, members of the public or any other third party.

Each participant is responsible for the condition or repair of his bicycle. Bicycles must be maintained and must be in a safe condition and in compliance with the technical regulations.

Assistance by anyone other than official technical support personnel will be grounds for immediate disqualification. This prohibits the use of spare wheels and bicycles and requires that each competitor must be prepared to deal with any mechanical malfunctions.

All bicycles must undergo a mandatory check by the official technical support of the race or at check-in. Only bicycles that have passed the control will be admitted.

Cyclists are required to listen to the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.

Participants may proceed on foot with their bicycles if necessary.

Competitors must stay to the right as much as possible and let others pass on the left, respecting all traffic laws, road regulations and the instructions of the race officials and the Police. On roads accessible to vehicles, the center line must not be crossed.

The swimming and cycling courses must be completed within 1:30 pm from the start of the last competitor. The course must most likely be completed by 10:32 am.

The organizers reserve the right to disqualify those who do not complete the cycling phase within this time limit.

The organizers reserve the right to modify the cycling course or the distance of the cycling course taking into account weather conditions and the course itself.

 

Sprint Distance RACE RULES

Competitors must not alter the size or appearance of their race number, and must wear it clearly and visibly on the front.

Slower competitors must keep to the right to allow other competitors to overtake on the left. Runners must always remain within the cones and traffic barrier.

Runners who pass the cones and traffic barrier will be immediately disqualified.

No individual support vehicles, no external escorts to the race and no accompanying cyclists are permitted.

Friends, family, coaches or supporters of any kind may not approach the competitor by bicycle or other means, and may not pass food or other objects to competitors to avoid disqualification.

Athletes must throw cups, gels etc. into the area marked by special signs near refreshment points.

Runners are required to follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.

Assistance from outsiders is prohibited and the extent and nature of penalties for such offences are at the discretion of the Race Director and Race Referee.

Competitors must comply with traffic laws, road regulations and communications from Race Officials and the Police.

The race ends for all competitors at 11:12am.

The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any competitor who does not complete the race within this time limit.

The organisers reserve the right to change the route or distance of the race taking into account weather and route conditions.
